Privacy notice

KindCasa collects very little. You can read everything on this site without giving us any information at all, and without analytics running. This notice explains the small amount we do collect, in plain English.

Who we are

KindCasa operates the website at kindcasa.co.uk. We are the people responsible for the information described in this notice — in data protection terms, the “data controller”.

Information we collect

Newsletter sign-ups. If you enter your email address to join the KindCasa newsletter, we store that email address, a short label recording which page you signed up from, and the date you signed up. That's all — we don't ask for your name and we don't collect anything else with it.

“Was this helpful?” feedback. When you tap yes or no at the end of an article, we store only which article it was, whether the vote was positive or negative, and the date. We do not store your IP address, a visitor ID, a cookie, or anything else that could identify you. These votes are anonymous counts.

Google Analytics — only if you accept. Google Analytics is not loaded when you arrive. Nothing is requested from Google and no analytics cookies are set unless you choose Accept on the cookie banner. If you accept, Google Analytics collects information about your visit, such as pages viewed, approximate location based on your IP address, device and browser type, and how you reached the site. If you reject, or simply ignore the banner, no analytics run at all.

Technical logs. Like any website, our server records requests as it serves pages. If a page breaks in your browser, the error report sent to us includes the page address and your browser's user-agent string so we can fix it. These logs aren't stored in our database and aren't used to profile visitors.

The admin area. Signing in to publish articles is limited to KindCasa's own editor and uses a one-time code sent by email. Those sign-in records are ours, not visitors'.

Why we use information

To send you the newsletter if you asked for it; to see which guides readers find useful so we can improve them; to understand how the site is used and whether it works properly on different devices, where you've accepted analytics; and to keep the site secure and working.

We don't sell your information, we don't use it for advertising or remarketing, and we don't build profiles about you.

Lawful basis

Consent for the newsletter — you give us your email address specifically so we can send it, and you can withdraw that at any time. Consent for optional Google Analytics and its cookies, which is why nothing loads until you choose Accept.

Legitimate interests for keeping the site running, secure and improving — the anonymous helpful/not-helpful counts and our technical logs. This is a narrow interest and has very little privacy impact, because none of it identifies you.

Google Analytics and cookies

If you accept analytics, we load Google Analytics for the kindcasa.co.uk property, which sets its own cookies in your browser. It activates only after that choice, and we've switched off Google's advertising features. You can change or withdraw your choice at any time on our cookies page, using Change preference under “Your cookie preferences”. There's more detail there too.

Sharing and service providers

We don't share your information with anyone except the services we need to run the site:

• Google — Google Analytics, but only once you've accepted analytics. Google also serves the fonts used on the site, which means your browser requests those files from Google on any page.
• Our hosting platform (Vibecode) — hosts the site and its database, so newsletter sign-ups and feedback counts sit on infrastructure it operates. It also sends the one-time sign-in code to KindCasa's editor.
• Unsplash — many photographs on the site are served from Unsplash, so your browser requests those images from them.

We may also share information if we're legally required to. Retailers we link to are not given your information by us — but once you follow a link, that retailer's own privacy notice applies to what you do on their site.

International transfers

Google and Unsplash are US-based, so where they receive information — analytics data if you've accepted, or the fact that your browser requested a font or image — it may be processed outside the UK. Those companies apply their own safeguards for such transfers. Newsletter sign-ups and feedback counts are held in our own database rather than being sent to a third-party mailing service.

How long information is kept

Newsletter sign-ups are kept until you ask to be removed or we stop running the newsletter — we don't delete them on a fixed schedule, so if you want yours gone, just tell us. Feedback votes are anonymous counts and are kept indefinitely, because they can't be linked back to anyone. Google Analytics data is kept for the retention period set in our Google Analytics property, and is controlled by Google's own systems; you can also clear the analytics cookies from your browser at any time.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you can ask us to:

• give you a copy of the personal information we hold about you;
• correct it if it's wrong;
• delete it — for example, remove your email address from the newsletter;
• restrict or object to how we use it, where that right applies;
• withdraw your consent at any time, for the newsletter or for analytics, without needing a reason.

Because our feedback votes are anonymous, there's no way for us to find “your” votes, so those rights can't be applied to them.

If you're unhappy with how we've handled your information, you can complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.

Changes to this notice

We may update this notice as the site changes — for example if we add a new feature that collects information. The current version is always on this page.
