Methodology

How we choose the products we recommend

We research products against a clear set of criteria, looking at the available evidence alongside materials, specifications, durability, practicality and value.

How we choose products

We look at the factors that matter for a healthier home, alongside practical considerations such as durability, everyday usability and value.

  • Materials — favouring glass, stainless steel and natural materials where they make sense
  • PFAS / PTFE-free options — choosing products without these coatings where relevant
  • Less plastic contact — particularly around hot food, drinks and cooking
  • Durability — materials, construction and how well a product is designed to last
  • Replacement parts — whether worn components can be replaced
  • Everyday practicality — considering design, specifications and reputable independent reviews
  • Value for money — balancing price, quality and longevity
  • Manufacturer transparency — how clearly materials and specifications are disclosed
  • Available evidence — considering relevant research and guidance from reliable sources
  • Independent information — looking beyond manufacturer claims where credible independent information is available

When researching a guide, we look for reliable evidence relevant to the question — including peer-reviewed research, government and public-health guidance, reputable independent sources and manufacturer specifications where appropriate. We also consider independent product reviews when assessing practical factors such as usability and durability.

What we will and won't say

We describe what a product is made from, what it may replace and the practical advantages and limitations we identify through our research. We aim to include an honest limitation for every product we recommend.

We will never claim a product is "completely safe", "toxin-free" or "chemical-free" — those phrases aren't meaningful. Our aim is to help you make a better-informed choice based on the information and evidence available.

Recommendations are reviewed as products change, new evidence emerges or better options become available. See our affiliate disclosure and editorial policy for how we maintain our independence.
